Lights, Camera, Action!

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of traveling to Rockaway Beach, Missouri (one of the most charming small towns on the water) to shoot video for my soon to be released novel, Momma Don’t Own a Machine Gun. My husband and a fantastic writer/actor, Jerry-Mac Johnson, accompanied me. After an extraordinary lunch at the White River Grill (you have to go there and try it-Bill Kitchen serves up several INCREDIBLE dishes) we were ferried across the water by the mayor, Larry Cline. Ferried to where? Why the supposed 1920′s “hideout” of gangster Al Capone, of course! We had a great time tromping through the woods; Dan snapped photos, while Jerry-Mac and  I recorded video and audio footage.  I then merrily sent the entire days work off to my forever friend, Jeff Niemes, in Texas, who will hopefully turn it into a viable book trailer.

Kansas SCBWI Conference

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the SCBWI conference in KC. What a treat! I met so many interesting, talented writers & illustrators! My favorite presenter (who did double duty as keynote speaker) was author Linda Sue Parks. That woman has a great sense of humor and is full of practical advice: on how to become your own best editor (read voraciously) , the importance of developing a writing habit (she does two pages a day), and revising (which she calls playing.) Clare Vanderpool, author of the 2011 Newbery Medal winner, Moon Over Manifest, was there sharing advice, as were editors and agents who shared their views on such topics as book apps & how e-books are actually expanding the reading base-good news for everyone! I learned so much from attending a group critque led by JB Cheaney & moderated by Sue Ford- I only wish I could read the endings to all the great stories the group members shared! I also attended sessions on voice, revision, and world building: can’t wait to apply what I learned to Momma Don’t Own a Machine Gun-which just arrived from Brighter Books for second edits.

As if the conference wasn’t enough- Dan & I attended the Chiefs game at Arrowhead Sunday AND they won their first game since last December!
